The Cascadia Open Education Summit invites you to share your groundbreaking ideas, research, and best practices for using open educational resources (OER) or engaging in open educational practices.

Submit a presentation proposal. There will be an opportunity to learn, share, and network with colleagues throughout the full conference.

We invite proposals with a focus on the following areas:
- Equity and access: Levelling the playing field with open educational practices (includes issues of connectivity and access to digital devices; providing equitable solutions for a lack of access to devices and data plans; open philosophies, and equity, diversity, and inclusion for traditionally underrepresented/minoritized groups.)
- Scalability: Creating adaptable OER beyond boundaries (includes strategies, organization, structure, and process for implementing and scaling OER initiatives; collaboration and support models; communication and promotion of OER adoption; policy; sustainability; approaches for mainstreaming open education)
- Fostering growth in the OER ecosystem: Supporting faculty to stimulate real change (includes strategies, policies, and action plans for professional development in open educational practices)
- Adaptability in trades, vocational, and career training: Successes and challenges (includes stories from the current climate, active learning, and living labs)
- Orientation to open education: Introducing newbies to the open education ecosystem (includes stories from mentors and mentees; self-guided open advocates; open pioneers; success story and pitfall lightning talks; how-to sessions)
- Collaborative practices: Bridging the gaps between departments and institutions (includes interdepartmental and interinstitutional OER projects; leveraging libraries and learning and teaching centres)
Proposal Criteria and Submission Process
Reviewers use the following criteria when evaluating submissions:
- Relevance – The topic is relevant to open education and contributes to research and/or effective practices in the field.
- Coverage – The topic is clearly described and the session covers the topic adequately.
- Innovation – The topic has innovative concepts.
- Research/Outcome-Based – The topic is research/outcomes-based.
- Takeaways – The session includes key takeaways for participants.
- Improved Processes and Best Practices – The session could help improve processes and/or best practices in the field.
- Knowledge – The speaker or speakers appear to have sufficient knowledge and expertise to address the topic.
Step 1: Identify the track that your session will address:
- Equity and access: Levelling the playing field with open educational practices
- Scalability: Creating adaptable OER beyond boundaries
- Fostering growth in the OER ecosystem: Supporting faculty to stimulate real change
- Adaptability in trades, vocational, and career training: Successes and challenges
- Orientation to open education: Introducing newbies to the open education ecosystem
- Collaborative practices: Bridging the gaps between departments and institutions
Step 2: Identify the type of session you are proposing:
- Presentation: 1-2 presenters discuss a topic (25 minutes).
- Panel Presentation: 2-4 individuals address a topic from multiple perspectives. Inter-institutional panels are encouraged (55 minutes).
- May combine up to four similar proposals into one themed panel, with 15-minute individual presentations, a break, and a 25-minute follow-up panel (90 minutes).
- Workshop: 1-3 presenters guide participants in a digital hands-on session (40 minutes).
Step 3: Prepare Your Proposal
Prepare the following components of your session proposal in a neatly formatted email attachment:
- Title – Up to 125 characters
- Abstract – Briefly describe in 50 words or less the topic you plan to present or discuss. This abstract will be used in the conference program.
- Session Objectives – List 1-3 learning objectives for attendees participating in your session.
- Session Description – In 250 words or less, summarize what you plan to cover and how you will incorporate attendee participation. Interactive sessions are strongly encouraged, such as using real-time polls, Twitter feeds, small group discussions, etc.
- Target Audience – Indicate the audience you’re gearing the presentation towards, and level of experience with open education.
- Roles: Student, faculty, administrator, librarian, instructional designer, executive leadership, other
- Experience with OER: novice, intermediate, advanced
- Presenter Bio(s) – Provide a short bio for each presenter (100 words max.).
- Contact Information – Provide the phone number and email address of the lead presenter, as well as the contact information of up to three additional presenters.
- Proposals are due by Friday, January 29, 2021
- Proposal acceptance notifications will be sent out by Friday, February 26, 2021.
