Women in Trades

This is an open event for women in the skilled trades (apprentices, journey-people, and faculty) to gather for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, success stories, and struggles with being in the skilled trades. Building communities of practice is essential to the successful journey from apprentice to graduate. We will be hosting a few women Trades faculty to share their stories and ideas on how we can encourage and promote more women to enter and more importantly complete their training and education in the skilled trades.

Facilitator:

Andrea Durdle (she/her) is a Red Seal plumber, Class B gasfitter, and pipe trades instructor at Camosun College in Victoria, B.C. Andrea got her start in the trade in 2006 through the pipe trades pre-apprenticeship training program at Camosun College, going on to work for a large mechanical contractor and experiencing work in commercial, residential, and service aspects of the trade. In 2018 Andrea made the shift to instructing, teaching pipe trades programs and women in trades cohorts at Camosun College. Andrea is committed to being an advocate for women in trades at the college and in the community and has worked on initiatives at Camosun to create a more welcoming and inclusive trades classroom environment, including a pilot curriculum project focused on retention of women in Red Seal trades. Andrea is a proud UA member of Local 324 and the co-chair of their Women’s Committee. She also sits on the advisory board for the Construction Center for Excellence in Washington State.

While this session focuses on the experiences of women, people of all genders are welcome to attend and listen.
