Come Moodle Around With Us

Since 2004, BCcampus has supported the development of online educational tools. One such tool is Moodle, giving students and teachers alike flexible web-based learning options, allowing for unrestricted education and empowered teaching.

Moodle is open-source software that creates a venue for online learning, educational discussion, document storage, and more. Because it is an open source application it can be freely downloaded and used by anyone without paying licensing fees.

“While Moodle looks and behaves like a website, it supports quizzes, interactive discussion forums, assignment submissions, and a grading matrix. It is password protected, user-friendly and easy to navigate,” said Gina Bennett, e-learning specialist at College of the Rockies.

The Moodle course-management system is used by learning institutions in approximately 207 countries globally. In BC it is used by College of the Rockies, Thompson Rivers University, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology , Selkirk College, University of Northern BC, and Vancouver Island University – to name a few.

“Moodle is a popular option because it is much easier for instructors, designers and students to navigate than other, older systems. Plus, the open-source model gives us a great deal of flexibility,” said Bennett.

As early as 10 years ago, educational institutions were using more complex and costly course-management systems. Currently, BCcampus hosts Moodle for public post-secondary institutions (providing both server space and comprehensive technical support) to provide a cost-effective, user-friendly system for students and educators throughout the province.

“Users also receive worldwide support through a large, supportive online community of Moodle users,” continued Bennett.

“If you are looking for a solution to an issue or way to modify something in Moodle, someone usually comes up with, and shares a solution. By pooling our collective resources, we not only help to solve each other’s problems but also contribute to program improvements and better functionality.”
