Since 2009, BCcampus has used Twitter as a vital space to share knowledge, promote events, and cultivate meaningful connections. It has been a platform where we’ve connected with the British Columbia post-secondary community and have celebrated our collective efforts, from advancing equity in education to addressing critical issues like student mental health, Indigenous reconciliation, LGBTQ+ inclusion, open education, and innovative teaching and learning practices.
But today, we are announcing that we will be stepping away from the platform. This decision was not made lightly. It stems from our growing concern about the direction in which the platform, now called X, has evolved in recent years.
Over the years, we’ve observed significant changes in how X operates. The platform has increasingly become a place of hostility, misinformation, and disinformation. For an organization committed to fostering dialogue based on respect, truth, and inclusivity, these trends are deeply troubling.
The changes in moderation policies and algorithmic shifts have allowed hateful and abusive content to proliferate and have increasingly supressed critique and diverse perspectives. Meanwhile, the spread of false or misleading information undermines the very foundation of informed, evidence-based conversations—conversations that are essential to the work we do in higher education.
We believe that our digital spaces should reflect our values, and at BCcampus our core values include being inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist. From our values statement:
We practice creating and sustaining environments and communities in which everyone feels welcomed, valued, respected, and empowered to participate fully and authentically in ways that work for them.
Continuing to invest time and resources into a platform that feels like it no longer aligns with our values is inconsistent with our mission.
This is not the end of our online engagement. We are actively exploring and building presence on other platforms where our community can thrive. We encourage you to connect with us on LinkedIn, subscribe to our newsletter, or visit our website to stay informed about our initiatives and events.
To everyone who has followed, shared, and supported us on X: thank you. Together, we’ve built something meaningful, and we are committed to continuing this work in spaces that better uphold the principles of inclusivity, equity, and respect.
We hope you’ll join us as we move forward into new digital landscapes.
