Earlier this spring, the British Columbia Teaching and Learning Council (BCTLC) elected new co-chairs to lead the council. We are excited to introduce the new leadership team, Ken Jeffery and Brett McCollum. As BCTLC co-chairs, they are poised to steer the course and tackle the evolving landscape of teaching and learning in British Columbia from 2024-26.
Ken Jeffery is associate director of the Centre for Teaching & Educational Technologies at Royal Roads University. His interests in visual learning design, socially constructive learning, and open education practices inform his approach to learning design and educational technology. When asked about the BCTLC, Ken said, “By forging relationships with our institutional peers, we can accomplish much more than working alone.” He values BCTLC’s role in fostering collaboration, community-building, and advocacy for the advancement of teaching and learning in our institutions.
Dr. Brett McCollum is the director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Thompson Rivers University. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University and was selected as a 3M National Teaching Fellow in 2019. Brett is internationally recognized in scholarship on teaching and learning and discipline-based education research. He emphasized the dynamic changes in society and post-secondary classrooms in recent years and said, “BCTLC brings educational leaders together to discuss customized strategies and explore system-wide solutions for the many distinct educational contexts in British Columbia.” Brett’s passion for improving the student learning experience has earned him several awards and recognition for his contributions to educational leadership.
Congratulations Ken and Brett — we look forward to your leadership of this great community!
It is with gratitude that we acknowledge the leadership of Dr. Laura MacKay and Melanie Meyers, past co-chairs, 2022-24. Notable highlights from Laura and Melanie’s term include their efforts in building community by hosting monthly meetings and conversations on key topics affecting teaching and learning in the post-secondary sector, with a focus on the challenges we faced during and after the pandemic. They also supported BCcampus’ Studio23 event, championed the West Coast Teaching Awards celebrating excellence in post-secondary teaching, and acknowledged the 10th anniversary of the BCTLC by offering a professional development opportunity at its 2024 annual general meeting.
Thank you, Laura and Melanie, for your exceptional contributions and dedication.
