FLO MicroCourse: Artificial Intelligence Images in the Classroom

About the MicroCourse:   FLO MicroCourse

Join us for an exploration of the ethical minefield of artificial intelligence (AI) image generation in this free, one-week Facilitation Learning Online (FLO) MicroCourse.  

We will tackle the ethical complexities of this fast-evolving technology, exploring issues like bias, ownership, and the future of creativity. Through hands-on experimenting with AI tools, analyzing examples, and engaging in debates with peers, you will have the opportunity to build your own ethical framework to navigate this powerful technology. Artists, teachers, and art enthusiasts are welcome!  

Learning Outcomes:  

  • Understand the key ethical considerations in AI art and image generation.  
  • Evaluate potential biases and harms in AI art tools.  
  • Examine issues of intellectual property, ownership, and artistic agency in AI-generated work. 
  • Develop a personal framework for ethical decision-making with the use of AI in artistic practice.  

Participants should be prepared for approximately 6-8 hours of asynchronous work throughout the week.  

We also have two optional synchronous sessions planned on Tuesday, June 18, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and on Thursday, June 20, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

MicroCourse Facilitators:  

Your FLO facilitators for this course are Brent de Waal and Jason Toal.  

Brent (he/him) is a learning designer focused on creating meaningful experiences for adult learners. With experience teaching in both university and private corporate settings, he understands the unique challenges and opportunities of diverse learning environments. As a parent with children in university, he is actively invested in the learning process, bringing a personal perspective to his work. He likes to use his background in art and photography to make courses and workshops with a focus on the creative process. Brent is looking forward to some great discussions in this FLO MicroCourse!  

Jason (he/him) is a creative learning designer and human-centred educational technologist based in Victoria, B.C. With over two decades of experience in educational technology, Jason is on a mission to make learning more engaging, accessible, and downright fun. From leading teams at institutions like University of British Columbia Okanagan to consulting independently with Same Page Studios, Jason has championed technology-driven learning experiences that spark curiosity and drive innovation. He’s not just about pushing buttons; he’s about pushing boundaries.

About the Workshop

This workshop aims to empower educators to weave generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into their pedagogical practices, with a strong emphasis on amplifying human qualities like creativity, empathy, collaboration, and personalization in learning environments. Through interactive discussions, participants will delve into the ethical and mindful application of GenAI in education. This session also sets the stage for educators to co-develop a practical framework to maximize the human element when designing meaningful learning experiences with GenAI.  

 By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

About the Facilitator

Your FLO facilitator for this session is Dr. Gwen Nguyen.   

Gwen (she/her) is an advisor for the learning and teaching team at BCcampus. Prior to joining BCcampus, Gwen worked as a learning experience designer at the University of Victoria, where she provided support to educators in developing and delivering courses across various modalities including face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. Her professional background also includes experience as a university lecturer and researcher at both the University of Victoria and the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. Gwen holds a PhD in education studies from the University of Victoria and a Master of Arts in applied linguistics from Saint Michael’s College. Her research interests include poetry inquiry as a reflection practice in education, digital pedagogies in higher education, and participatory action research. Recently, Gwen has developed a keen interest in exploring pedagogical strategies that ethically and creatively integrate AI into teaching and learning environments. Gwen also brings valuable experience in navigating positionality as both an instructor and researcher.

About the Facilitators

Your FLO facilitators for this lab will be Lucas Wright and Afsaneh Sharif.

Lucas Wright (he/his) is a senior education consultant at the University of British Columbia (UBC). With over 14 years of experience, he specializes in learning technology and design, particularly in the application of GenAI. His background includes a Master of Arts in Adult Education from UBC and certifications in digital storytelling, instructional skills, and online learning. His goal is to enhance teaching and learning by integrating GenAI to foster dynamic and innovative learning environments.

Afsaneh Sharif (she/her) has over two decades of experience in higher education and she is currently serving as a senior project manager and faculty liaison at the University of British Columbia. Her expertise lies in project management and learning design, particularly within the sphere of online learning. She holds a PhD in knowledge management, concentrating on enhancing the quality of online education programs. Her role involves applying research findings to develop effective educational strategies, striving to uphold the highest standards in digital and online learning and other modalities. Additionally, she is a co-chair of at the B.C. Digital Learning Advisory Committee within the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. She has wide-ranging interests including promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion; improving quality; ensuring accessibility; advancing online learning; fostering community practice; advocating for open education; and implementing UDL principles. Lately, her focus has shifted towards investigating the potential and challenges of GenAI in the educational sector.

Digital Literacy Challenge Series

Digital Literacy Challenge Series

Educators, are you ready to begin your new quest? Join us for an eight-week asynchronous challenge to expand your digital literacy toolkit. During this series, you will learn about the eight competencies outlined in the B.C. Digital Literacy Framework, strategies for incorporating these skills into your teaching practice, and how to support student success through digital literacy.

You will receive one challenge in your inbox each Monday morning over the course of eight weeks. Each challenge will address the following:

What: a definition of the digital literacy competency

Why: the importance of each competency in teaching practice

How: approaches for developing the competency in our own learning, and how to incorporate these skills in our teaching practice

Interactive activities and thoughtful prompts will help you learn how to incorporate digital literacy into your teaching practice and generate ideas on how to teach these skills to students.

Each weekly challenge should take between one to four hours to complete, depending on how deeply you want to explore. There will be four optional, synchronous drop-in sessions held over Zoom where you can ask questions and connect with peers in a casual setting.

The synchronous sessions will be held at the following times:

  • July 17, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • July 31, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • August 14, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

About the Session

Join us for this exciting Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) session in partnership with Vancouver Island University.  FLO Friday logo 2023

Jessica Gemella and Anwen Burk are curriculum, teaching, and learning specialists with the Centre for Innovation in Education and Learning (CIEL) at Vancouver Island University (VIU). Responding to faculty requests on how best to use emerging technologies in their classroom, Jessica built a digital literacy toolkit. Anwen was subsequently invited to collaborate on expanding it.  

The result? A toolkit designed to support higher education professionals to facilitate conversations on the ethical use of digital technologies for meaningful collaborations within digital communities. Specifically, this toolkit aims to support faculty in collaboratively creating class agreements addressing issues such as ethical digital technology use, netiquette, and digital citizenship, all in service of maintaining overall well-being.  

This toolkit helps learning communities to:  

  • Consider the ethical and legal implications of collecting and disseminating digital information  
  • Assess the risks and benefits of having an online presence 
  • Establish healthy limits with technology to maintain well-being 
  • Engage in meaningful communication and collaboration with digital communities 
  • Explore how digital tools such as artificial intelligence (AI) can extend teaching and learning opportunities  

The overarching goal is to make this digital literacy toolkit adaptable for widespread adoption. As such, it will be available to reuse and adapt.  

Join us for this free one-hour virtual FLO session! You will participate in a co-creation activity and be asked to reflect on the process and the outcomes. Participants will be invited to start thinking about how they could use the toolkit at their institutions and how it could be adapted for their use.

About the Facilitators

Your FLO facilitators for this FLO Friday session will be Anwen Burk and Jessica Gemella.  

Anwen Burk (she/her) is a curriculum, teaching and learning specialist at VIU’s Nanaimo campus. She is particularly interested in how technology can be leveraged to make learning more flexible, accessible, and human centered. She previously worked at the University of Alberta as an instructor and as digital learning consultantand at Red Deer Polytechnic as an instructional designer. She lives on the traditional and unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation with her husband and her cat.  

Jessica Gemella (she/her) is a curriculum, teaching, and learning specialist (CTLS) at VIU, situated on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples including the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-Naw-As, Quw’utsun, and Tla’amin. Jessica has a background in teaching horticulture and has also served as VIU’s trades and applied technology CTLS. With a commitment to enhancing the quality of digital education, Jessica is pursuing a Master of Arts in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University. Her research interests centre on building resilience in higher education, faculty development, and digital literacy.

This event is a part of the OER Production Series.

In open education, the goal is to increase access to education by changing the way we think about knowledge. Instead of bundling knowledge in an expensive textbook or putting it behind a paywall, open education sees knowledge as a public good that should be freely available to everyone to learn from, build on, and customize for their own purposes. In this session, we will explore open education as a philosophy and consider the benefits of open educational resources (OER). We will explore how to find, use, and share OER. We will discuss copyright and Creative Commons licences, look at examples of OER, explore OER collections, and identify ways to get started in using OER.

In this webinar, we will introduce how to design OER that meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). OER Production SeriesThis event, part of the OER Production Series, is the first of two sessions discussing how to use Pressbooks to create and share open educational resources (OER). We will introduce Pressbooks and show you how to create and share OER with students and fellow educators. Pressbooks is an online self-publishing tool available to all post-secondary faculty and staff in B.C. and the Yukon. Topics include how to create an account, how to create a book in Pressbooks, and an overview of the Pressbooks editor. The webinar will also introduce such topics as creating math equations using MathJax, importing content, H5P, and sharing books in multiple formats.
