What does “care” look like in learning and teaching today?

The topic of health in education is coming up more and more often. We see articles and news items regarding the health of students, faculty, campuses, and institutions. It is showing up in aspects of our personal and professional lives. In this time of awareness, we have an opportunity to reflect on our practices; how do we care for ourselves, our students, and each other? In the face of competing priorities, how do we take care of our values, principles, and purpose? How does care manifest – or fail to manifest – in our practices, policies, structures, spaces, technologies and pedagogies? How could we be better caretakers and caregivers in the context of post-secondary education and in service of student learning?

Important Dates:

  • Proposals deadline: Dec. 18, 2018
  • Adjudication: Dec. 18 – Jan. 12, 2018
  • Presenters notified and confirm acceptance: Jan. 15 – 26, 2018
  • Registration goes live (with schedule): Feb. 1, 2018
  • Festival of Learning: May 28-30, 2018 in Vancouver, B.C.

The program committee of the Festival of Learning 2018 is comprised of members from institutions and roles across BC post-secondary education; in the spirit of inclusivity we are seeking proposals from all areas of teaching and learning. We invite session proposals that consider the ideas of “health” and/or “care” in higher education today. Sessions should align with one or more of these three general topics:

Educational Technology

  • Creating flexible, supportive learning environments
  • Educational technology tools
  • Accessibility
  • Politics of vulnerability within the Educational Technology context
  • Taking care of privacy and data

Open Education

  • Open Educational Resources, Open Textbooks
  • Z Degrees/Zed Creds
  • Open Pedagogy
  • Open Educational Practices
  • Open Platforms/Infrastructure
  • Synergies with other Open movements (e.g., data, science, access, etc.)

Teaching & Learning: Teachers, Learners, and Services

  • Diversity & Inclusion, including Indigenous Education, Internationalization
  • Access to Education, Accessibility in Education
  • Practices: Learning Design, Facilitation, Assessment
  • Research: Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL), Scholarly Teaching & Learning
  • Mental Health for all within and across our organizations
  • Services & Supports for post-secondary students, faculty, and staff
  • Preparing post-secondary educators for the new BC K-12 Curriculum

Session Formats:

We are open to different presentation styles, and we encourage facilitators/presenters to plan sessions that invite attendees to participate actively in some way(s). All proposals will be reviewed by our program committee according to this rubric.

While our focus is on issues facing the B.C. post-secondary system, we welcome proposals from other parts of Canada and the world.

The call for proposals for the Festival of Learning 2018 is now closed. The submissions are being reviewed, and notifications of proposal acceptance will be made Jan., 2018. Registration opens Feb. 1, 2018.
