Publication Announcement: Case Studies Exploring Business Models for Collaborative Curriculum and Technology Services

BCcampus is pleased to share Pooling Resources, Building Value: Case Studies in Collaborative Technology and Curriculum Services, a new collection that explores how different initiatives deliver shared technology and curriculum services across multiple organizations. Through eight detailed case studies, the collection examines how these collaborative ventures achieve sustainability while fostering meaningful sharing and cooperation, with a focus on organizational structure, revenue models, sharing agreements, community engagement strategies, and lessons learned.

These case studies explore diverse and context-dependent models; there is no single model that sustains collaborative projects. However, these case studies demonstrate some common themes:

  • Sustainability is iterative;
  • Centralized administration is crucial to coordinate collaboration;
  • Pooling resources generates efficiencies for public systems;
  • Flexible contribution and cost models ensure equitable participation;
  • Shared governance fosters long-term commitment and buy-in; and
  • There is often a definable “tipping point” when initiatives move from uncertainty to sustainability.

Most importantly, these cases show that the value of collaborative services goes beyond technology or curriculum – it lies in the communities built, knowledge shared, and the collective capacity strengthened. Whether you’re establishing a new shared service or refining an existing one, these real-world examples offer practical guidance on sustainable models that achieve more together than any single organization could alone.

This collection will be valuable for educational leaders, library administrators, technology directors, and others developing collaborative initiatives that make efficient use of resources while serving broader public interests.

This publication is one of the deliverables of the Shared Educational Resources and Technology (SERT) Initiative, a project managed by BCcampus in collaboration with the SERT Advisory Committee.
