The Okanagan College Students’ Union, representing students at the Kelowna, Penticton and Salmon Arm campuses will be hosting Open Education Resources Access awareness day on October 23. This one-day 3-campus event will include promoting the Open Textbooks Now campaign from the British Columbia Federation of Students. We will be calling our students, faculty and administration to take action on using open and alternative texts in the classrooms. We will be educating our campus community on the many ways textbooks can be adopted, adapted and evolved to open learning options and examining the high costs of textbooks. We will be asking students how much they spent on textbooks this semester and what they could have used that money for instead, we will be demonstrating the full costs of required texts for 1 year of programming in each faculty to demonstrate the high costs of textbooks. We will also be providing coffee and baked goods for students, staff and faculty and we will be working with our Open Textbooks Taskforce to help promote momentum throughout the College towards open and alternative texts.
