About the Session:
This Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) Friday workshop is designed to introduce participants to the foundations outlined in the B.C. Post-Secondary Digital Literacy Framework and to provide an overview of the B.C. Digital Literacy Hub. This resource includes a variety of tools and materials, such as a self-assessment Digital Literacy Superpower quiz, course materials, and professional development resources tailored for B.C.’s post-secondary educators. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand and discuss the eight thematic competencies critical to digital literacy in B.C.’s post-secondary education;
- Identify their strengths as well as untapped potential using the digital superpower quiz; and
- Locate, reflect upon, and share a chosen resource from the OER Repository that resonates with their educational needs.
About the Facilitators:
Helena Prins (she/her) is an advisor of learning and teaching at BCcampus and coordinates the Facilitating Learning Online (FLO) portfolio. She began her career as a high school teacher in South Africa. Over the past 20 years, she has taught students of all ages and stages on four continents. A golden thread throughout her career has been breaking down barriers to learning. Prior to joining BCcampus in 2020, she worked as a career learning and development advisor at Royal Roads University. As an immigrant, she continues to value the opportunity to support all students, especially international students, in finding and building their career path in Canada. She is a certified career strategist with Career Professionals Canada and associate faculty at Royal Roads University.

Gwen Nguyen (she/her) is a learning and teaching advisor at BCcampus. Prior to BCcampus, Gwen worked as a learning experience designer at the University of Victoria, supporting educators with developing and delivering courses in all modes: face-to-face, hybrid, and online. She has also worked as a university lecturer and researcher at the University of Victoria and the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. Gwen holds a PhD in educational studies and an MA in applied linguistics. Her research interests include poetry inquiry as a reflection practice in education, digital pedagogies in higher education, and participatory action research. Most recently, Gwen has contributed to the development of B.C. Digital Literacy Hub as a pathway designer. Her work has included the development of the content for the Superpower Quiz, digital literacy mini lesson plans, among other resources featured on the website.
