FLO @ ABEABC Conference

Sylvia Riessner and Sylvia Currie (aka “The Sylvias”) were invited to facilitate a morning session at the Adult Basic Education conference held in Harrison Hot Sprints. They were excited about introducing the Facilitating Learning Online workshop (FLO) to the ABE community of educators, and also to meet up with graduates of the Facilitator Development Online workshop (FDO). As is often the case, the FDO alumni group experienced that powerful connection that comes with first collaborating online around a shared purpose then meeting for the first time face to face. They had several opportunities to share stories and laughs throughout the two days.

This session, Facilitating Learning Online, provided an opportunity to learn about the unique needs of ABE faculty who are teaching or transitioning to more online course implementation and methods of learner support. It also added to the Sylvias’ list of opportunities to practice using liberating structures (LS). They have written up individual reports about the experience. Read on!

Also, keep an eye on the BCcampus Professional Learning calendar for events using, and learning how to use, liberating structures. Sylvia Riessner and Beth Cougler Blom (also a FLO facilitator) are experimenting with the use of LS in web conferences. The first session Liberating Your Teaching, hosted by Royal Roads University, took place earlier this month. There will be more!
