12 Apps of Christmas for Teaching and Learning

On December 1st, ETUG will launch the first B.C. 12 Apps of Christmas for teaching and learning. Similar to the successful U.K. event, this fast, fun, micro-learning opportunity is free, open, online and offered to you by B.C. post-secondary educators for B.C. post-secondary educators. All are welcome to participate.

12 Apps of Christmas

Sylvia Riessner, long time ETUG member and a BCcampus Facilitating Learning Online leader, participated in four of the six 12 Apps of Christmas events, in the U.K. in 2015 – all different, all fun and found it fast-paced, very valuable. She has brought forward this idea and we are excited to see if come into fruition.

The focus will be on:

  • pedagogical value of the apps/tools but also includes ones that are useful for those helping others to learn or for anyone learning themselves (i.e., librarians, researchers)
  • experiential and connected learning

Participants will explore a new app a day for 12 days. Each day will introduce you to an app, where to get it, how to use it, and provide some ideas of how it might be used for teaching and learning. A challenge activity will be highlighted and participants are encouraged to share their results and reflect on any additional ideas of how to use it in the future through their blogs and on social media, using the #12appsBC hashtag.

Each participant who completes the challenge will have their name entered in a draw for a prize.

From December 1-16, it’s all happening at 12appsforchristmas.ca. Join us! Sign-up for notices  for more information on this.

Notable quote:

“I participated in the U.K. events last year (four of them!) and enjoyed them so much. It seemed as though it would be a fun and educational event of interest to many in B.C. educational institutions. I approached Leva Lee at etug for help with launching this kind of event and she suggested offering 1 app – 1 day to teams from any educational institution in B.C.” – Sylvia Riessner, Educational Consultant
