In fall 2014, we will be bringing three faculty fellows on to our team.
The Faculty Fellows Program is designed to achieve the following results:
- Encourage adoption of existing open textbooks.
- Advocate for and educate faculty about adaptation and creation.
- Ensure the quality and relevance of our collection.
Fellow Responsibilities
Faculty Fellows will be responsible for the following:
- Engage in research that determines the efficacy of open textbook use in BC institutions. The specific focus of the research would be decided in consultation with the BCcampus Open Textbook team
- Provide mentorship to faculty new to open textbooks through presentations and consultation. This activity would take place both within the context of the fellows’ home institution and their discipline.
- Provide feedback to the BCcampus Open Textbook team to ensure continual improvement of our collection and outreach activities via regular (monthly) meetings.
Term and compensation
Appointments will be for a one year term beginning September 2014, and each fellow will receive $10,000 at the conclusion of their service.
Proposals
Those interested in serving as fellows through the 2014 program are asked to submit proposal of no more than two pages. The proposal should summarize your experience working with Open Resources, specifically Open Textbooks, and your ability to act as an advocate on behalf of the project. The proposal must also include a commitment to participate in monthly meetings, and to license all work products using a CC-BY license.
It is our intention to represent our system to the degree that is possible with only three positions. In addition, we will represent both parts of the Open Textbook project, i.e. we will select at least one faculty who would represent the 40 most highly enrolled subjects, and at least one who would represent the 20 texts for skills training.
Evaluation
Fellows will be evaluated using three criteria:
- Activity related to and familiarity with Open Educational Resources and Open Textbooks to (up to 30 points)
- Ability to represent institution and discipline (up to 20 points)
Based on these results, the third criteria will be the applicant’s home institution. Where there are multiple candidates with total scores within 5 points, the fellow will be selected from the institution that best represents the B.C. post secondary system. Where the institutions factor does not apply, the highest scoring applicant will be awarded the position.
Application Process
Faculty who wish to apply should submit a document outlining their interest and including their qualifications for a fellowship to open@bccampus.ca.
