How It Started/How It’s Going: 10 Years of Open Textbooks in B.C.

*Note: This session has passed. Please view the recording (and resources) below.

In fall 2012 the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training in B.C. announced funding to create the B.C. Open Textbook Collection and tasked BCcampus with developing a collection of openly licensed textbooks that aligned with the top 40 enrolled subject areas in the B.C. post-secondary system. Fast forward to 2022, and the collection has become a reality. On the verge of its tenth anniversary, the B.C. Open Textbook Collection is about to hit an incredible milestone in student savings. In this session we will outline the growth of the collection, highlighting significant milestones of the past 10 years. We will talk about the challenges we faced creating the collection, how both the collection and the processes associated with managing and growing the collection have evolved, and the many lessons we learned along the way while managing a system-wide open textbook initiative. We will also do some future gazing about what the next 10 years could hold in store for open education in B.C., including a preview of the new B.C. Open Collection.
