Research in action

One way we support scholarly teaching and learning practice and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is through an annual Scholarly Teaching Fellows program. The purpose of this program is to empower post-secondary educators in British Columbia to conduct and disseminate original research on their own teaching practice.

Shifting the research lens

We strive to create invitations and support for B.C. educators, creating space for them to apply their intellectual and research curiosity to their teaching practice in the same way they would to challenges in their academic disciplines.

As described by Dr. Nancy Chick:

The scholarship of teaching and learning is a synthesis of teaching, learning, and research in higher education that aims to bring a scholarly lens—the curiosity, the inquiry, the rigor, the disciplinary variety—to what happens in the classroom (brick-and-mortar, virtual, co-curricular, et al.).

Anticipated impact

An important part of this program is the requirement for all fellows to share research findings openly. Fellows are selected, in part, for their proven ability as researchers to make sure their results can be published and shared broadly so other educators, researchers – and ultimately students – across the province can benefit from their findings.
