A community of open scholars
The Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellows for 2017/2018 were selected for their familiarity and experience with open educational resources (OER) and tasked with finding ways to drive change and raise awareness of open educational practices throughout the post-secondary education system of B.C. Mentored by Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, Special Advisor to the Provost on Open Education and a Psychology Instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU), the team explored the ways in which open textbooks are used in post-secondary institutions in B.C.
Through research and evaluation, the Faculty Fellows Dr. Jennifer Barker from Douglas College; Ken Jeffery, Instructional Designer at Royal Roads University (RRU); and Dr. George Veletsianos, Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University (RRU), collaborated on the creation of a report to address and identify Eight Patterns of Open Textbook Adoption in British Columbia.
Raising awareness
Focusing on evidence-based understanding and sharing real-world experiences, the Research Fellows were able to help communicate the opportunities and benefits made possible through use of OER, while acknowledging the variety of methods available to support the development and advancement of OER in the post-secondary institutions of B.C.
