2018-19 Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellows
To help academic leaders in British Columbia pursue their commitment to improving the student learning experience through the use of open educational resources (OER) and open educational practices (OEP), we offer a fellowship program: The Open Education Advocacy and Research (OEAR) Fellows.
OEAR Fellows are focused on encouraging the adoption of open textbooks; advocating for student-centred learning design and the integration of open practices; conducting research on open education for post-secondary institutions in B.C.; and helping BCcampus ensure the resources in our open collection are relevant and high-quality.
Historically, the OEAR Fellows concentrated their research and investigation on a single project. For the 2018-2019 candidates, we opened the focus to enable the four members to pursue separate but related research projects.
The 2018-2019 OEAR Fellows
Dr. Jonathan Verrett, an Instructor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), is investigating the economics of developing open textbooks to compare the development and costs through a lens of open textbooks vs. commercial publisher resources.
Jonathan Verrett’s fellowship related research has been published in the papers below:
